Grade Calculator

Work out each category as a percentage, multiply it by that category's weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight.

Take homework worth 20% of the course with 45 / 50 on it, quizzes worth 30% with 26 / 30, and tests worth 50% with 84 / 100. The three percentages are 90%, 86.67% and 84%. Multiplied by their weights they come to 1800, 2600 and 4200, which add up to 8600. Divided by the total weight of 100, the course grade is 86%, a B.

A category with nothing graded in it yet carries no weight at all, so an empty row does not count as a zero. Once every category has a score, the same arithmetic gives the score you still need on what is left, which is what the final grade calculator works out.

The weights are divided by their own total, so they do not have to reach 100. Change the tests in that example from 50% to 40% and the weights total 90. The grade becomes 86.22%, a B, because every weight is measured against 90 rather than 100.

That is also how a course part way through the semester works. Enter only the categories that have been graded and the answer is the grade on the work done so far.

These are the site's default cutoffs. Schools and districts publish their own, and a school that awards pluses and minuses splits each letter into three, so 89% is a B here and a B+ on a plus/minus scale. The grading scale page sets out the tables districts publish.
